AI 新闻周报 Vol.01 — May 14–20, 2026

This week was dominated by Google I/O. In parallel, Meta's AI-first restructuring deepened, OpenAI's Daybreak cybersecurity platform gained enterprise traction, and Gartner confirmed AI spending is on track to hit $2.59 trillion in 2026. Four cards, four stories.

Card 1 — Cover: Issue overview and the week's story map.
Card 2 — Google I/O 2026: Gemini 3.5 launched, AI smart glasses got a release window, and Google's search engine got a full AI agent overhaul.
Card 3 — Meta + OpenAI: Meta reassigned 7,000 employees into AI-native orgs two days before laying off 8,000 others. OpenAI's Daybreak cybersecurity platform reached major banks.
Card 4 — The numbers: Gartner's $2.59 trillion 2026 AI spend forecast — up 47% year over year.

Google I/O 2026: everything in one day 1

Gemini 3.5 is out. The full version and a cheaper Flash variant went live immediately in Search and the Gemini app. The subscription tier got reshuffled: a new AI Ultra plan at $100/month, and the old $250/month tier drops to $200.
The physical hardware story: AI-enabled smart glasses arrive this fall, developed with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. The entry model is audio-only with cameras; it pipes Gemini to a speaker in the earpiece and lets you ask questions about what you're looking at. A display model follows later.
On the search side, the "smart search bar" now runs an AI agent inside the results page — it answers with context, generates explanatory images, and adjusts layout by content type (video, news, product). Generative UI rolls out this summer.

Meta went all-in on AI this week — and cut 8,000 jobs 2

On Monday, Meta told 7,000 employees they were being moved into four new AI-native organizations with flatter management structures and an explicit mandate: build AI tools and apps. Two days later, layoff emails hit inboxes at 4 a.m. for roughly 8,000 employees — 10% of the company's workforce.
The 2026 capex plan stays intact: $115–135 billion, most of it toward AI infrastructure. Metaverse headcount has been quietly shrinking for months. WhatsApp also launched encrypted "Incognito Chat" with Meta AI on May 13 — a move toward consumer chatbot privacy that Anthropic researchers called the most significant structural change in consumer AI chat privacy in years.

OpenAI Daybreak: AI for cyber defenders 3

Launched May 11, Daybreak pairs OpenAI's frontier models (including GPT-5.5-Cyber) with Codex to automate vulnerability scanning and patching at the application layer. GPT-5.5-Cyber is designed for more autonomous security operations than its predecessor — a shift from human-in-the-loop to agent-driven triage.
Major Australian banks confirmed this week they're running Daybreak to test their systems. 4

$2.59 trillion and counting 5

Gartner's latest forecast: worldwide AI spend hits $2.59 trillion in 2026, a 47% increase over 2025. Enterprise software leads the growth curve, followed by AI infrastructure (data centers, chips) and AI services. Context: last year's figure was roughly $1.76 trillion.
That number sits alongside broader tech-sector restructuring. Cisco cut 4,000 jobs this week to free up resources for AI. Microsoft, Block, and Coinbase all announced reorganizations this month. The pattern: companies shrinking headcount in legacy divisions and redeploying capital toward AI infrastructure.
